Carousel Ballroom ,Fillmore West 5/24-26/68
Catalog No. AOR-2.164
This scarce poster is from a Carousel Ballroom show that featured Big Brother & The Holding Company. The Carousel was formerly known as the El Patio Ballroom and was a major venue for swing bands. In 1967, several Bay area bands, including the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, formed together to produce dances independently of Chet Helms and Bill Graham. Ultimately, they were better musicians than they were businessmen, and in 1968, Bill Graham took over the Carousel and renamed it the Fillmore West. This poster comes in two different types with the same design.
The Type 1 poster was printed on white index stock and measures approximately 14″ x 19″. This type is far scarcer than the Type 2.
The Type 2 poster was printed on white index stock and measures approximately 14″ x 19″. On this poster, the band name of Big Brother & the Holding Company has been crossed out; they cancelled and did not play at this concert.
The Type A handbill was printed on white index stock and measures approximately 7" x 10¼". This type is far scarcer than the Type 2.
The Type B handbill was printed on white index stock and measures approximately 7" x 10¼". On this poster, the band name of Big Brother & the Holding Company has been crossed out; they cancelled and did not play at this concert.
