Ace of Cups
Ace of Cups is an American rock band formed in San Francisco in 1967 during the Summer of Love. They are widely recognized as one of the first all-female rock bands to emerge from the Haight-Ashbury psychedelic scene.
The band came together at the end of 1966 when guitarist Denise Kaufman (a former Merry Prankster) met Mary Ellen Simpson at a New Year’s Eve party hosted by Blue Cheer. They soon joined forces with bassist Mary Gannon, keyboardist Marla Hunt, and drummer Diane Vitalich. They quickly joined the Bay Area music scene, playing venues like the Fillmore and Avalon Ballroom, and sharing bills with acts such as the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix (whom they opened for shortly after Monterey Pop), and many others.
