Avalon Ballroom 5/26-28/67
The trio of FD-63, FD-67, and FD-71 combine to make a beautiful triptych. All use photographs of The Charlatans that were taken by Herb Greene and feature the band members in cowboy outfits. The FD-63 and FD-67 were designed by Rick Griffin, and the FD-71 was designed by Robert Fried—obviously in keeping with the Griffin theme.
The original poster was printed on tan stock and measures approximately 14⅛″ x 21″. The brown color is a rich brown that matches the postcard.
The second print poster was printed on two different paper stocks, one which is much lighter than that used on the originals, and one that is very similar to the paper used to print the originals. Both measure approximately 14″ x 21″. The color on these second print posters is more of a watery, off-brown color than the originals and the postcards.
The postcard comes in three varieties, all of which measure approximately 5″ x 7″:
The Type A card has a “place stamp here” reverse.
The Type B card has a bulk rate permit on the back.
The Type C card has a bulk rate permit on the back and was mechanically addressed and sent to people on the Family Dog mailing list.
