Fillmore East 3/8/68

Catalog No. MSO-FME.1968.03.08

This extremely rare image advertised the first show that was held at the newly opened Fillmore East in March 1968. The performance was lauded by the press, citing Janis as ranking in sexual pizzazz with Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix, and praising “her belting, groovy style,” mixing Bessie Smith, Aretha Franklin, and James Brown. The image is pictured in The Art of Rock as Plate Number 2.99 and was produced as both a poster and handbill. The image was designed by Charles Brandon and the photograph of Big Brother was taken by Linda Eastman—later Linda McCartney.

The original handbill was printed on white stock and measures approximately 5¾” x 4”.
