Avalon Ballroom 10/11-13/68
Late in the history of the Family Dog—around number 129—the decision was made to print the posters in black ink as a cost-savings tool. The posters from this era are not as popular as the full-color versions, but there are still some great-looking pieces. The print runs are a bit smaller than their color counterparts. This poster marks the October 1968 appearance of the Grateful Dead at the Avalon Ballroom.
The original poster was printed on uncoated index stock and measures approximately 14″ x 20½″.
The postcard comes in three types:
The Type A card has a “place stamp here” reverse and measures approximately 4″ x 6″.
The Type B card is a double card of FD-141 and 142. This card has a bulk rate permit and measures approximately 6″ x 9″.
The Type C card is the same as the Type B and was mechanically addressed and mailed to people on the Family Dog mailing list.
