Fillmore Auditorium 3/3-5/67

This poster, created for an Otis Rush show with The Mothers and Morning Glory, is one of several that was printed with a technique called “split fountain.” This produces a poster which is one color at the top, another color at the bottom, and a mixed or transition color in the middle. The central image is a man’s face viewed from the front with a woman’s face attached at the left side. Whether it was deliberate or not on Wes Wilson’s part, the effect is very similar to a stained glass window—a medium that Wilson also experimented with. If music is “organized noise,” Frank Zappa was always looking to see what the limits of organized noise might be. For this concert, he rented a thunder machine from a movie studio and used it as a rhythm instrument.

The original poster was printed on vellum and measures approximately 13½″ x 22½″. This poster was printed using a split-fountain technique, resulting in a color change from top to bottom. The background to the right of the “s” in “Mothers” is a rust color.

The second print poster was printed on white index stock and measures approximately 13½″ x 22½″. This poster was also printed using the split-fountain technique, but the background to the right of the “s” in “Mothers” is a pale orange color.

The postcard comes in three varieties, all of which measure approximately 5″ x 7″. Since the cards were printed alongside the posters, there are three different color cards for each different type. One card is blue; one is multiple colors transitioning from blue-green to a reddish rust color; and one card is red.

The Type A card has a “place stamp here” reverse.

The Type B card has a bulk rate permit on the back.

The Type C card has a bulk rate permit on the back and was addressed and sent to people on the mailing list.
