Fillmore Auditorium 11/25-27/66
Catalog No. BG-39
The image used in this design incorporates entwining figures of a nude woman and a man wearing an Egyptian headdress. It is vaguely art deco in design, and it was printed using what is called a "color wheel"technique that varies the ink color as it goes down the paper. This made each poster a little different than the last. The show took place very shortly after Grace Slick joined Airplane, and it included Moby Grape and James Cotton on the bill.
The original poster was printed on white stock and measures approximately 13½″ x 22¼″. This poster was printed using a color wheel technique, so every poster looks different. The distinguishing feature of the original is the distance from the “P” to the “F” in the wording “Printing by West Coast Lithograph Co. SF.” On originals, that distance is 2″.
The second print poster was printed on white stock and measures approximately 13⅝″ x 22¼″. This poster was also printed using a color wheel technique, but the length of the printing credit is now 2⅞″. Most, but not all of the second print posters display prominent horizontal lines. The posters without these lines seem to be scarcer.
The third print poster was printed on thicker white stock and measures approximately 13⅝″ x 22⅛″. This printing was not done using a color wheel technique, so all third print posters display the same color sequence from top to bottom. The simplest way to differentiate this printing is by the “dividers” in the “James Cotton Chicago Blues Band” are brown on this printing and red on the other printings.
The original handbill measures approximately 4⅞″ x 8″. Like the original posters, these were printed using a color wheel technique, so the colors vary widely. In addition, some of these handbills were addressed and mailed to people on the mailing list.
The postcard was printed concurrent with the second print poster, and measures approximately 5″ x 7⅞″. These also vary widely in color and, like the second print posters, most of but not all of these cards display prominent horizontal lines.
