Avalon Ballroom 7/8-10/66

This poster had a small original print run of 1,000 copies and is hard to find in top condition today. Known as “Keep California Green,” the originals were deliberately printed out of registration to simulate the visual effects of LSD. The second print posters were not printed out of registration, and the Family Dog logo is substantially smaller than on the original. The central image of Smokey the Bear has been redrawn so that his belt buckle reads “SMOKE!”’an obvious reference to marijuana.

The original posters were printed on vellum and measures approximately 14⅛″ x 20″. All originals carry the notation “The Bindweed Press San Francisco” below the “Av” in “Avalon.”

The second print posters were printed on uncoated index stock and measure approximately 14″ x 20″. The notation “No. 16-2” appears in the lower right hand corner and the Bindweed Press credit has been deleted.

A forgery of this poster exists and has the “San Francisco Poster Co.” credit.

The original handbill comes in two types, both printed on thin paper and measuring approximately 8″ x 11″.

Type A was printed on light green paper in green ink.

Type B was printed on white paper in green ink. This version is much scarcer than Type A.
