Avalon Ballroom 5/27-28/66

Catalog No. FD-10

This classic poster, known as “Hayfever,” marks the first shows by the Grateful Dead at the Avalon Ballroom. It is for this reason that this poster is somewhat expensive. An interesting composition by Wes Wilson, this poster does not have a photograph like many of his other early Family Dog posters. Instead, the central image is composed of several different types of lettering placed over a ribbon-like design.

Generally, this poster is available in top condition if one is willing to pay the going rate. Second print posters, while inexpensive, seem to be a bit hard to find-no doubt due to the Grateful Dead connection. The handbill is extremely rare and seldom seen for sale.

The original poster was printed on white vellum and measures approximately 14″ x 20″. It carries the Union logo #72 in the lower right corner.

The second print poster was printed on uncoated index and carries the notation “No. 10-2” in the lower left corner.

The original handbill measures approximately 5″ x 8″ and was printed on white paper in black ink.
