Fillmore Auditorium 2/19/66
Catalog No. FD-1
Known as the “Tribal Stomp,” this great poster represents the first Family Dog concert promoted by Chet Helms. The central photograph was taken by Edward Curtis and is from a book of photographs of Native Americans entitled The American Heritage Book of Indians. Chet suggested the use of the image and Wes Wilson is credited with the design. Wilson was involved in the design of many of the early Family Dog and Bill Graham posters, and is widely known for his use of lettering to form the psychedelic images that make up the central design.
The original of this poster is quite rare, and it is widely believed that the press run was limited to 250 posters. As a result, an original is very expensive and most collectors opt for a reasonably-priced second print.
The original poster is on thick, uncoated index stock and measures approximately 14″ x 20″.
The second print poster, most likely printed in 1967, was printed on thinner index stock and measures approximately 14 1/4” x 20 1/2”. The notation “No. 1-2” is printed in the lower right corner and “© Family Dog Productions 1725 Washington St. San Francisco” is printed in the lower left corner. Beware of fake “originals” where the bottom of the Family Dog credit has been cut off. For more information on how to detect this forgery, contact us or consult Eric King’s guide.
The third print poster, probably printed prior to 1968, is very similar to the second print, except that the credit in the lower left corner has been changed to read: “1967 c Family Dog Productions 639 Gough St. San Francisco, Calif. 94102”.
The original handbills all measure approximately 5″ x 8″ and are extremely rare. There are three different varieties:
The Type A original handbill was printed on very thin, flimsy white paper in black ink;
The Type B original handbill is printed on yellow paper in black ink; and
The Type C original handbill is printed on blue paper in black.
In addition, a decent forgery of this handbill was made circa 1980.
