Avalon Ballroom 3/3-4/67

Catalog No. FD-50

Victor Moscoso designed this now scarce poster for a show at the Avalon Ballroom featuring The Doors. At the time of this show in March 1967, the band was flying high off the release of its debut album, The Doors, which hit #2 on the U.S. charts. At the same time, they had released the singles, Break on Through (To the Other Side), and Light My Fire, which quickly went to #1. Due to the popularity of The Doors and the small quantity of originals that were printed, this poster was reprinted shortly after the show.

The original poster was printed on white index stock and measures approximately 14″ x 19″. The ticket outlet strip on the original is printed in green ink. Original posters have a small black spot near the top of the left side of the second “R” in “Sparrow.”

There are several different reprints of this poster; only the more commonly-seen are described below:

The second print poster was printed on white stock and measures approximately 14″ x 20″. The ticket outlet strip on this poster is white and there is a horizontal printing flaw across “Sparrow.”

Another reprint, FD-50-RP-3 was printed on white stock and measures approximately 14″ x 19⅞″. This poster has the ticket outlet strip replaced with "Printed by Offset in Three Colors on International Paper's Springhill© Whitetag, Basis 100". There is also a short essay about Victor Moscoso on the back.

Yet another reprint, FD-50-RP-4 was printed on white stock and measures approximately 14″ x 19⅞″. This reprint has a blank ticket outlet strip. These usually have a horizontal printing flaw across the word "Sparrow".

The last commonly-seen reprint was printed on white stock and measures approximately 14″ x 20″. The ticket outlet strip is printed in green ink as seen on the original. This reprint does not have the printing flaw described under the original, and the blue ink is much lighter.

The postcard comes in three varieties, all of which measure approximately 5″ x 7″:

The Type A card has a “place stamp here” reverse.

The Type B card has a bulk rate permit on the back.

The Type C card has a bulk rate permit on the back and was mechanically addressed and sent to people on the Family Dog mailing list.
