Rick Griffin and George Hunter of The Charlatans designed the FD-56 using a photograph of The Charlatans taken by Herb Greene. The original print run of this poster was small and it was reprinted twice.
The original poster was printed on white index and measures approximately 14″ x 20″. The photograph appears in gray tones, and the blue border is lighter in color than the reprints.
The second print poster was printed on white index stock and measures approximately 13⅞″ x 20″. The photograph appears in brown or sepia tones, and the words “Avalon Ballroom” appear in black.
The postcard comes in three varieties, all of which measure approximately 5″ x 7″.
The Type A card has a “place stamp here” reverse.
The Type B card has a bulk rate permit on the back.
The Type C card has a bulk rate permit on the back and was mechanically addressed and sent to people on the Family Dog mailing list.
