Avalon Ballroom 9/2-3/66

Catalog No. FD-24

Known as the “Tree House”, this poster has an odd-looking central image of a house supported by a bird’s foot. This poster marks the first San Francisco appearance of the 13th Floor Elevators-a psychedelic band from Texas. An original print run of 2,500 posters makes this one tough-but not impossible-to find in top condition.

The original poster was printed on vellum and measures approximately 14″ x 20″. It carries the notation “The Bindweed Press San Francisco” under the “Av” in “Avalon.” The Family Dog logo is white surrounded by red and lacks much detail.

The second print poster was printed on vellum that is much thicker than that used for the originals. The notation “No. 24-2” appears in the lower right corner and the Bindweed Press credit has been deleted. The Family Dog logo is printed in black ink and has good detail.

The original handbill exists in four different types:

Type A is a light red color with a dot screen background. This handbill has an I.D. magazine page on the back and measures approximately 9″ x 12″;

Type B is a darker red color with a dot screen background. This handbill has an I.D. magazine page on the back and measures approximately 9″ x 12″;

Type C matches Type B, with the exception that the back is blank; and

Type D was printed on heavier salmon-colored paper in red ink. This handbill has a blank back and measures approximately 8″ x 12″.
