This poster advertised Bob Dylan’s first time playing at the prestigious Newport Folk festival in Newport Rhode Island. Dylan played on the bill with many other great folk acts of the day. Unlike many of the other Dylan concert posters of the day, The 1963 Newport Folk Festival poster is tall and skinny and was printed on thin paper stock. The art work was done by renowned artist and folk artist Eric Von Schmidt who is perhaps Best known for his Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec inspired poster for Bob Dylan and Joan Baez’s 1965 east coast tour.

This Bob Dylan and Joan Baez concert poster from the New Haven Arena in March, 1965 was one of the few times that this design was used to advertise an upcoming concert. It was supposed to be used to advertise Dylan’s east coast tour but because Dylan disapproved of the art work the image was scrapped and a more standard 1965 Dylan tour blank poster was used. The art was done by Eric Von Schmidt. Many copies of this poster are known to exist without the concert info at the top, but finding one with concert information printed on it is a very tough task.

Perhaps the most significant moment in Folk and Rock music history occurred at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival when Bob Dylan went electric for the very first time. His fans were dismayed. Dylan’s set at the folk festival was recorded and filmed and you can actually hear the disgruntled crowd in the background when Dylan starts to play. There are two versions of the 1965 Newport Folk festival poster. One featured a cranberry red background with black lettering and the other version was a simple white background with black lettering. There are no printers credits on either poster, although it is assumed that the posters were printed locally by the Franklin Printing Company, who were responsible for printing the 1964 Newport Folk Festival posters.

Considered one of Dylan’s finest performances, the 1964 Newport Folk festival marked the second time Dylan had been asked to play the festival. On the bill was an array of musical talent of the day including Johnny Cash,Joan Baez, Sleepy John Ested, and Pete Seeger. This concert poster was printed on thick cardboard and featured blue print on a canary yellow background. The poster was printed locally by Franklin Printing Company.

The image on the 1965 Bob Dylan Queen Elizabeth Theatre concert poster was created by poster artist Bob Masse. This concert took place on April 9, 1965 in Vancouver, Canada. Masse inadvertently spelled Dylan’s name on the poster wrong, and the poster had to be reprinted to correct the mistake. The Bob Dylan Queen Elizabeth Theatre concert poster is printed on thin paper and is small compared to typical Dylan posters. Masse created some of the better known psychedelic concert posters of the 1960’s. Many had bright colors with beautiful women featured on them.

Bob Dylan’s October 31, 1964 concert at Philharmonic Hall in New York City is considered by many to be his finest performance ever. The concert was recorded by Columbia records and was released many years later on CD. The poster was printed by Murray Poster Printing Company out of New York City and was actually printed on two very different paper stocks. One version was printed on white cardboard using red ink for the lettering and the other version was a thinner tan stock with red lettering. It is interesting to note that unlike most of their posters from the day, Murray posters chose not to use a stock photo on their posters for this concert but rather stuck with the block like lettering.

While the Troy Armory poster is shown, this Bob Dylan image was also used for a 1964 Bob Dylan concert poster at Symphony Hall in Boston, Massachusetts. The posters were printed by Metropolitan Show Print in Boston. This poster is smaller than most Bob Dylan posters. This image was used for the shows at the Troy Armory in Troy, New York and Symphony Hall in Boston.

This Bob Dylan horizontal layout is different than most Dylan posters and features a great image of Dylan on stage. This was the first time that Bob Dylan played at Syracuse University. The poster has been bootlegged extensively and most copies seen are fake. The fake posters are slightly smaller than the originals and the shading around Dylan’s ear is incorrect.

This image was the concert poster of the Bob Dylan 1966 tour. The concert poster on the left was for the Seattle concert at New Center Arena on March 25th, 1966. Murray Poster Printing Company in New York printed the poster with the lower portion blank. Daniel Kramer took the picture and is common to Bob Dylan 1960s posters.
Other cities and venues that used this poster are the Mosque in Richmond, VA; Municipal Auditorium in Norfolk, VA and the Agradome in Vancouver, British Columbia.

This is an interesting Bob Dylan concert poster for two reasons. The concert was held at Yale during Princeton Weekend, although at first glance you might believe the concert was at Princeton. Yale students would have gone to see the Yale-Princeton football game and then see Bob Dylan at the Indian Neck Folk Festival later that night. The line on the poster – “yes it is I who is poundin’ at your door if it is you inside who hears the noise” comes from a poem called 11 Outlined Epitaphs by Bob Dylan. The poster was produced by Yale University. This was the first and last time Bob Dylan played at Yale in the 1960s

This 1964 San Jose Civic Auditorium concert poster was the first time Dylan played San Jose. He returned a year later for a second show at the same venue. in 1965. This is a great example of a simple folk festival concert poster with spearmint lettering with a white background.

This is a vintage November 1963 Bob Dylan concert poster from the Mosque Theatre in Newark, New Jersey. This would mark Dylan’s first appearance in New Jersey. He would return less than two years later to play Symphony Hall in Newark, New Jersey. The poster is a boxing style type poster and is printed on thick cardboard. It features a nice promotional photograph of Dylan and displays some interesting quotes describing how the young Bob Dylan had been received by the critics thus far.
