Catalog No. BG-29
“The Sound” is one of Wes Wilson’s best and most widely known images. The curvaceous woman dancing in the nude was a representation of the era. The popularity of this poster led to several different printings. The OP-1 was printed in black ink; the OP-2 has magenta-colored ink; the OP-3 has a purple-colored ink. All three are quite scarce due to small print runs and the posters’ popularity. This combination makes this poster quite difficult to find today, especially in top condition.
The original poster comes in three distinctly different types:
The Type 1 original poster was printed on white stock and measures approximately 14″ x 24½″. This version is printed in black ink only.
The Type 2 original poster was printed on white stock and measures approximately 13½″ x 24½″. This printing has the figure and words “The Sound” outlined in magenta ink.
The Type 3 original poster was printed on white stock and measures approximately 13½″ x 24½″. This variety has the figure and words “The Sound” outlined in a bluish-violet ink.
The second print poster was printed on white stock and measures approximately 13¼″ x 24¼″. This printing matches the postcard with the West Coast Litho credit on the back and is smaller than the original posters.
The third print poster was printed on white stock and measures approximately 13¼″ x 24¼″. This printing matches the postcard with the Creative Litho credit on the reverse.
The fourth print poster was printed in 1986 and measures approximately 14″ x 24½″. The colors are red, gold, and blue, and this poster cannot be mistaken for anything other than a fourth print.
The original handbill comes in three types, all of which measure approximately 5″ x 8¾″:
The Type A handbill matches the Type 1 poster and is printed in black ink only.
The Type B handbill matches the Type 2 poster. Some copies of this handbill have a printing flaw that resulted in the green background spilling over onto the lower legs of the female figure.
The Type C handbill matches the Type 3 poster.
The postcard comes in three major types:
The Type A card matches the second print poster and measures approximately 5″ x 8⅜″. This card has a West Coast Litho credit on the back.
The Type B card matches the third print poster and measures approximately 4⅞″ x 8¼″. This card has a Creative Litho credit on the back.
The Type C card matches the fourth print poster and comes in two sizes: 4¾″ x 8⅛″ and 3⅝″ x 6⅛″.
