Wayne State University, Detroit, MI 6/1/67

Catalog No. AOR-3.134

This rare image was designed by Gary Grimshaw to promote a June 1967 performance by Sun Ra and MC5 at Wayne State University in Detroit. Sun Ra was a well-known jazz composer, poet, and philosopher who headed the "Myth Science Arkestra"(as it was known at this time). Opinions of Sun Ra's music were divided, but high praise came from two of the main architects of bebop: trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and pianist Thelonious Monk, who encouraged Sun Ra and endorsed his music.

The poster was printed with blue and yellow ink, but the handbill appears in various shades of purple.

This handbill was printed on white stock and measures approximately 8” x 10½“.
