Avalon Ballroom 7/1-3/66

Grass Roots at Avalon Ballroom 7/1-3/66 by Wes Wilson

© Chet Helms DBA Family Dog Productions All Rights Reserved

Catalog No. FD-15

AA bizarre creation from the mind of Wes Wilson, the central image of this poster is a photograph of a man with outstretched arms, which is viewed from the bottom of his feet up towards his head. The man in the photograph is Salvador Dali and the photographer was Philippe Halsman. In the original photograph, (which was shot from below, through a sheet of Plexiglas) there is a helicopter hovering over Dali’s head and Dali appears to be attached to the helicopter by his mustache.

The original poster was printed on vellum and measures approximately 14″ x 20″. It carries the credit “The Bindweed Press San Francisco” in the lower right corner. Many copies have a small hand lettered sticker that says “SUN” covering “SAT.”

The second print poster comes in three distinctly different types. All measure approximately 14″ x 20″ and carry the notation “No. 15-2” in the lower left corner. None of the second print posters carries the Bindweed Press credit.

Type A was printed on a dull/matte finish uncoated index stock.

Type B was printed on a glossy stock and is thicker than the Type A.

Type C was printed on a very thin glossy stock, much thinner than Type B.

The original handbill also comes in three different variations, all of which measure approximately 5″ x 6″ and were printed on very thin paper.

Type A was printed on green paper in black ink. The central figure is a silhouette.

Type B was printed on green paper in brown ink. The central figure displays more detail than the Type A.

Type C was printed on brown paper with brown ink.
