Avalon Ballroom 6/24-25/66

Big Brother and the Holding Company at Avalon Ballroom 6/24-25/66 by Stanley Mouse & Alton Kelley

© Chet Helms DBA Family Dog Productions All Rights Reserved

Catalog No. FD-14

OOne of the most popular posters of the Family Dog series, this carries the Zig-Zag rolling papers logo and lettering. When Mouse and Kelley decided to use this design, it is apparent that they knew that it constituted copyright infringement; they included the quotation at the bottom of the poster: “What you don’t know about copying and duplicating won’t hurt you.” Apparently, the Zig-Zag folks saw this poster as great free advertising and never bothered Mouse and Kelley. The popularity of this poster was so great that it became the first poster in the Family Dog series to be counterfeited. The original posters are scarce in top condition today, presumably because every hippie in San Francisco needed one hung on the wall. Even second print posters carry a slightly heavier price tag, but third prints are quite affordable and a great way to display this famous image.

The original poster comes in two distinct types, and both carry the notation “The Bindweed Press San Francisco” in the lower left corner:

Type A is printed on vellum in silver ink and measures approximately 14″ x 20″.

Type B is printed on vellum in gold ink and also measures approximately 14″ x 20″.

The second print poster is also printed on vellum and measures approximately 14″ x 20″. It carries the notation “14(2)” below the “a” in “Ham” as well as the Bindweed Press credit.

The third print poster was printed on uncoated index stock and carries the notation “14(3)’ below the “a” in “Ham”. On this poster the Bindweed Press credit has been deleted.

There are two deceptive forgeries of this poster, both bearing a resemblance to the originals. It is advisable to consult Eric King’s guide to help determine the authenticity of these pirate prints.

There are two types of original handbills:

Type A is printed on very thin stock with the Family Dog logo printed in gold ink. This handbill measures approximately 5″ x 7⅝″.

Type B is also printed on very thin stock, but the Family Dog logo appears in blue ink. This handbill measures approximately 5⅝″ x 7⅝″.
