Avalon Ballroom 1/24-26/69

Grateful Dead at Avalon Ballroom 1/24-26/69 by Rick Griffin

Catalog No. AOR-2.24

CConsidered by many to be one of the greatest rock posters of all time, this classic Rick Griffin design is known as “Aoxomoxoa,” and was used as the title and cover design for the Grateful Dead’s third album. After the Family Dog left the Avalon Ballroom, Soundproof Productions became the first company to produce rock shows there. This poster was used to promote the very first Soundproof show in January 1969. Griffin’s artistic genius shines brightly in this poster’from the incredible lettering to the sexual symbology. While there are numerous bootlegs of this poster, there are also several legitimate printings that fit every budget.

The original poster was printed on thick white stock, and measures approximately 21¾″ x 26¼″.

The second printing was printed on medium-weight stock and measures approximately 21¾″ x 26¼″. This printing was produced for the Roundhouse show in London and is marked as “1976 European Limited Edition” and bears a serial number.

The third print poster was printed on thick white stock, and measures approximately 21¾″ x 26¼″. This printing is commonly known as “Jose’s late night printing,” and was printed by Jose Kent.

The fourth printing was printed by Art Rock on thick white stock and measures approximately 26″ x 40″. In addition to the poster, this printing includes three tickets at the bottom and an embossed replica of Griffin’s signature.

The original handbill was printed on stock matching the original poster and measures approximately 5¾″ x 7″.
