Various Venues February - March, 1965

Bob Dylan at Various Venues February - March, 1965 by Eric Von Schmidt

Catalog No. AOR-1.101

OOne of the great images of the folk era is this Toulouse-Lautrec-inspired poster designed by artist and fellow folk musician, Eric Von Schmidt, a friend of both Dylan and Baez. His stylized initials “VS” can be seen in the lower left corner of this exceptional work of art. The Richard Waterman photograph serving as the basis of Von Schmidt’s design is published in “Positively 4th Street” by David Haju.

This poster is extremely scarce because it was used for only 10 eastern U.S. tour stops between late February and late March. Research, however, indicates that it was highly likely that circulation of poster blanks to local promoters never occurred beyond the two New England dates. We are aware of only two posters with the venue printed on it, that being for the March 6, 1965 concert at Connecticut’s New Haven Arena. One example is currently on loan to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.

The handbill is nearly as rare as the poster and is seldom offered. On July 13, 2006, Wolfgang’s Vault sold one on eBay for $4,500 in less than NM condition. There are a few copies of the handbill known with a venue name printed on them, but these are extremely rare and seldom show up for sale.

The original poster was printed on white stock and measures approximately 13″ x 21″.

The original handbill was printed on white stock and measures approximately 5″ x 9″.
